Improvising and Comping on Guaguanco Rhythm - Daniele Chiantese
In this video, almost six minutes of continuous impro, flowing within the rhythmic skeleton traced by the Rumba-Clave and with the use of a Guaguanco loop.
Setting up my way of thinking “in clave” is so much helpful to give a meaning and “story telling” to my phrasing (metric/linear/sticking) ideas.
- Getting into, at least, the basic rules of a traditional rhythm, is so helpful to strengthen out vocabulary and keep the mind-set that phrasing is not just a matter of combinations, but much more
- In this case I don’t play any of the most common Guaguanco patterns/orchestrations for drums that you can find in books
- But I continuously sing it inside while improvising and comping (with the help of a play along)
- This method of practice is one of the best, in my opinion, to try speaking with drums instead of just combining “pattern-blocks”
