Savannah Harris
- The knowledge and the singing
Ever since jazz rock was invented in the laboratories around Miles Davis, 'explosive dynamics' have been an integral part of the drumming vocabulary. The acceleration of fill-ins, breaks and polyrhythmic stop-and-go gave this style that extra kick that distinguished it from previous ones.
In the formative years of this music, acceleration was a quality per se. Her Hall of Fame is rich in drummer names: Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Jack de Johnette...
The explosive dynamics are also inherent in Savannah Harris' style, albeit in a transformed form.
In her hands, it sounds as if it were played through gently tinted retro glasses. Harris's style of playing has little in common with the bravado of jazz rock bands of the past. For her, the explosive is one stylistic device among many.
It comes in the guise of a sense of style: one moment Harris makes the volcano tremble, it erupts briefly, reveals some magma in the depths, and then the roof closes again over the glowing core.
In her ability to effortlessly switch between different gaits, Savannah Harris' solo shows the signature of a new generation of drummers:
- what we experience is a broadly trained sense of style that knows the origins of the various playing positions and combines them confidently: to create something that is new less in its ingredients than in its mixing ratios.
The result can be enjoyed in both ways: stylistically based on the many finely chiseled references or directly as a groove. Because despite all her historical awareness, Harris makes the instrument and the bodies of her listeners tremble.
She always has two things in mind at the same time: the intricate detail and the vibrating whole - the knowledge and the singing.
