About this concert:
- The SFJAZZ Collective is our all-star resident ensemble and composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz.
- Founded in 2004, the group includes music director and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Brewer, and drummer Kendrick Scott.
- The band has expanded beyond its original mission to embrace other influences outside of jazz history, and this year, the Collective embarks on the most audacious project in their history.
For the 2024-25 Season, each member of the SFJAZZ Collective composed a new work inspired by The de Young Museum's About Place collection featuring 42 works by more than 30 Bay Area artists. About Place is from 2022 Svane Family Foundation gift and will be on display at the museum from August 10, 2024 – September 28, 2025.
The exhibition explores how artists relate to their environments through place: place as the physical land, place as heritage, place as the imaginary, and place as belonging. Some of the specific subject's touch on topics like climate change, immigration, LGBTQ+ movement, California droughts and fires, and more.
