Steve Smith: SQ1 Drum Solo with Konnakol
Playing on a double bass drumset is always a pleasure, as demonstrated in this video featuring Steve Smith's SQ1 setup. The Sonor kit consists of two bass drums, a snare drum, three rack toms and two floor toms.
This solo performance showcases the orchestration of various Indian rhythms on the kit, accompanied by two tracks of unison Konnakol. Steve Smith studied Konnakol to expand his rhythmic knowledge, and this unique rhythm language developed in South India over hundreds of years.
The groove played after the Konnakol section is loosely based on John Bonham's drum part in "Good Times, Bad Times," which impressed Steve Smith when he first heard it in 1969.
The Sonor Satin Copper Brown SQ1 drum kit setup, made of 100% European Birch, was easy to tune and achieved a big melodic, sonorous sound.
