We recently asked the Woodsiders Collective if we could play "Add Standard" to a setlist. Trombone player Justus picked out a few ideas, and this was one of them.
I like to have a combination of songs in our sets, including modal ones and traditional ones with more changes. If everything is modal, it can become a bit boring for me, and vice versa. It also depends on the format and instrumentation.
In NYC, playing bebop/hard pop songs are often more popular among musicians than playing standards from the Great American Songbook. "On a Misty Night" was written by Tadd Dameron, so it still falls into that category while having sparse melodic movement in the A section.
For this recording, I felt like something had changed with my chord plucking. I probably changed the angle a bit and added more compressor than usual, which also affected the attack. It's a subtle difference, but let me know if you notice anything different.
